Fishing and Poker Update
I haven't blogged since November, mostly because I have been busy with work and family. And a little bit of fishing. We were blessed/cursed with safe ice by December 1, so I've been ice fishing as much as possible.
My first night out, I caught only one fish... but it was a 19-inch walleye, so I am not complaining. I have generally been doing very well catching large numbers of small crappies on Coon Lake. My new thing is to use glow-in-the-dark plastic baits (Ratso's, Shrimpo's, etc), which the crappies seem to love. I have caught very few fish worth writing about here (other than that walleye), but I have been catching a limit of crappies (limit = 10 fish) almost whenever I want it.
Poker has mostly been an up-and-down affair until the last couple of weeks. I would play well for awhile, but lose my patience and go on tilt. This is incredibly dangerous when you play as aggressively as I do. So, there was a clear pattern. I'd win for a few days or a week, and then I'd lose it all in a single day as I tilted and/or got overly aggressive.
One big thing was that I took advantage of Poker Stars' reload bonus at the end of December. I just cleared my $100 bonus today, my first real bonus whoring in a long long time. I started the month with about $200 in my account and I bounced between $200 and $300 for a long time. Then, something seemed to click and I have been playing very very well at $1/$2 6-max limit hold'em. I have had a few bad sessions, but that was exclusively the result of being over-aggressive, not being on tilt. Anyway, my account is now > $600, so hopefully I am back in the game for good (with a bankroll of > 300 BB's!).
One thing that has been a little bit fun for me are Poker Stars' double or nothing tournaments. They are 10-person sit-n-gos in which the top 5 people double their buy-in (minus the rake). I think my record, so far, is something like 8-2 -- and one those losses happened when I had to quit playing because of a lunch date with my wife.
