A quick poker story

I haven't been writing much, I know. The fishing has been so-so at best and the poker has been just plain awful.

To update the entire summer, my best fishing was for crappies on the St. Croix River. I had one fantastic day in which I had 15+ crappies (the biggest 12+ inches) and a handful of good days. I ended up catching three crappies over 12 inches for the open water season.

I caught relatively few other nice fish to speak about. I caught a nice bass (just under 3 lbs) on Comfort Lake one day. On my birthday, I caught a ~3.5 lb largemouth on Coon Lake. I suppose the biggest news was that I expanded my fishing repertoire, catching a bunch of fish on spinnerbaits this summer (prior to this year, I've caught ~90% of my fish on a Cotton Cordell BigO or on a tube jig).

The real reason why I am writing this entry, though, is to tell a quick poker story. For whatever reason, I decided to start playing No Limit Hold'em again at FTP, starting at the $0.02/$0.05 (blinds). I'm buying with 100 big blinds and I'm trying to play looser and to focus on playing in position. I'm raising with hands that I'd never raised with previously (57s!). For the last week or so, this has worked well for me and I've won maybe $20 over a relatively short sample size.

Today, though, I decided to take a shot at $0.05/$0.10 (blinds) for giggles. During the first three orbits or so, I raised maybe 4 times and I got three-bet each time and I folded each time. The fifth time, I raised with J9s from the button and the small blind raised me (again!) and I called. The flop came X 8 T. He checked and I bet out. He then check-raised me... so I shoved, basically knowing that he felt that he could push me around. Well, I was wrong, as he had 88, but I caught a 7 on the turn and an unnecessary Jack on the river. Needless to say, he was pissed!

He reloaded and he proceeded to berate me for poor play. Eventually, I took his stack again when I flopped a set of jacks and he could lay down an over-pair. About three hands after that, I stacked him a final time when he could lay down a pair of tens and I held then nut flush.
